Lip Filler Swelling Day by Day: What Is Normal After Treatment in Dubai

Lip Filler Swelling Day by Day: What Is Normal After Treatment in Dubai

Lip filler swelling is expected after treatment. It is usually most noticeable during the first one to two days, eases over days three to five and has mostly settled by around two weeks, which is when the result should be judged. The lips can look larger, firmer and uneven at first, and mild bruising, tenderness and small soft lumps are common and usually fade without treatment.

This guide sets out the usual day-by-day course, why the lips look uneven early on, what helps, which signs are not normal and need urgent contact, how cold sores, hyaluronidase and suitability fit in, and what lip filler costs in Dubai. If you are still deciding on treatment, our guide to lip filler in Dubai covers proportion and planning. The guide is general information, and your own physician’s instructions always take priority.

How Long Does Lip Filler Swelling Last?

The lips swell more readily than most areas of the face. They have a rich blood supply and loose tissue, and hyaluronic acid filler also draws water into the area. Swelling is the body’s normal response to the needle and the gel. The course below is typical, but individual courses differ, and the two lips are rarely identical.

Days 1 to 2: the peak

Swelling usually builds over the first day and tends to be at its worst within the first 24 to 48 hours, often most obvious the morning after treatment. The lips may feel tight, tender and heavy, look larger than planned and be noticeably uneven. Tiny marks from the needle are common. This is the stage when many people worry, yet it is the least reliable view of the final result.

Days 3 to 5: settling

From the third day the swelling usually begins to ease and the lips soften. Most of it has typically gone by the fifth day, although the lips may still feel slightly full or firm when pressed. Any bruising is changing colour at this stage and starting to fade.

Days 6 to 14: the final shape

Small amounts of residual swelling can last up to about two weeks. Published studies of hyaluronic acid lip fillers describe the common early effects, including swelling and bruising, as mostly mild to moderate and resolving within one to two weeks. At around two weeks the lips are usually soft, the asymmetry caused by swelling has gone and the result can be judged fairly. The swelling is temporary, whereas the filler itself lasts much longer, as explained in our article on how long lip filler lasts. Swelling, firmness or pain that is getting worse after day five, or that is still present beyond two weeks, should be reviewed rather than waited out.

Why Do the Lips Look Uneven at First?

Swelling is rarely symmetrical. One side may have had more needle passes, a small bruise may be forming beneath the surface, or the tissue on one side may be looser and swell more. Most faces are also slightly asymmetrical before treatment, and the lips are usually no exception. As a result one side, or the upper lip compared with the lower, can look fuller for several days.

For this reason a result is judged at around two weeks, not on day one. Asking for more product, or for dissolving, while swelling is still present risks correcting a pattern that would have disappeared on its own, and ending up with lips that are overfilled once the swelling goes. A review at about two weeks lets your physician look at the lips at rest, while smiling and while speaking, and decide whether a small adjustment is needed. If asymmetry remains after the swelling has gone, it can usually be refined.

Bruising, Tenderness and Small Lumps

Bruising happens when a needle or cannula passes a small blood vessel, and the lips contain many. It is common, can appear on the day or the next day, and usually fades over about one to two weeks, changing from red or purple to green and yellow as it clears. Blood-thinning medicines and supplements, alcohol before treatment and the very vascular nature of the lips make it more likely. A small bruise at the edge of the lip can be covered with make-up once the skin is intact.

Tenderness, tightness and sensitivity to touch are expected for a few days. Small soft lumps or firm areas can be felt inside the lip, particularly where product was placed, because swelling and the gel itself create texture. These usually soften as the swelling resolves. Do not massage or press on them unless your physician tells you to. A lump that stays firm, becomes red and painful, or is still present after two weeks needs an in-person review.

Aftercare That Helps

For the first day or two, a clean cold compress held gently against the lips for short periods, with a cloth between the ice and the skin, can ease swelling and discomfort. Avoid pressing hard. Keep your head raised on an extra pillow for the first night or two, which helps fluid drain from the face. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours, because heat and a raised heart rate widen blood vessels and can increase swelling and bruising. In Dubai, that also means limiting long periods in direct sun or a hot car.

Avoid pressure on the lips. That means no firm massage, no tight face masks and no non-urgent dental treatment for around two weeks, because dental instruments stretch and press on freshly treated lips. Keep the lips moisturised and drink water. If you need pain relief, ask your physician which option suits you, since aspirin and some anti-inflammatory medicines can increase bruising. Never stop a prescribed medicine without the advice of the doctor who prescribed it.

Does arnica help?

Arnica is a plant extract sold as a gel, cream or tablet, and many people use it for bruising. The evidence is limited and mixed. Small trials, mostly after surgery or laser treatment, have given inconsistent results, one randomised trial of laser-induced bruises found no significant difference from placebo, and a review of topical arnica at concentrations of 10 per cent and below concluded that its efficacy was not supported. Robust trials after lip filler specifically are lacking. Arnica is unlikely to do harm on intact skin, but it can cause contact allergy and should not be applied to the lips or inside the mouth, where it could be swallowed, or to broken skin. Treat it as an optional extra, not a treatment.

Normal lip filler effects and signs that need urgent care
Swelling, tenderness and small bruises are usual. Severe pain, blanching, a dusky colour or any visual change needs urgent contact.

What Is Not Normal and Needs Urgent Contact?

Most swelling is harmless, but a few signs point to a complication and should be acted on the same day, without waiting for the two-week review. Contact the clinic immediately, and if you cannot reach it, go to the nearest emergency department and say that you have had filler.

Vascular occlusion: the warning signs

Vascular occlusion happens when filler blocks or compresses a blood vessel and reduces the blood supply to the skin and lip. It is uncommon, but it is an emergency, because tissue can be damaged within hours. The signs are severe or increasing pain that is out of proportion to normal tenderness and does not ease; blanching, where the skin turns white or pale; a mottled, net-like, dusky, blue or purple colour; delayed capillary refill, meaning that when you press the skin gently and release it, the pink colour is slow to return; and, later, blisters, open sores or scabbing. Visual symptoms, such as blurred or double vision, a dark patch, loss of vision or pain around the eye, are rare but need emergency care at once.

Treatment is prompt injection of hyaluronidase to dissolve the filler, and consensus guidance states that every clinic using hyaluronic acid fillers should have it on hand and be trained to use it. Time matters, so do not wait to see whether the signs improve.

Signs of infection

Infection is uncommon. Warning signs include redness, warmth and swelling that increase after the first few days instead of easing, worsening pain, pus, a lump that becomes hot and tender, and fever or feeling unwell. They can appear within days or later. Contact your physician promptly, because treatment with antibiotics, and sometimes dissolving the filler, may be needed.

Angioedema and allergic reactions

Sudden swelling of the lips, tongue, eyelids or face with itching, hives, wheeze, a tight throat or difficulty breathing or swallowing may be an allergic reaction or angioedema and needs emergency care immediately. Swelling can also appear weeks or months later, sometimes after an illness, a vaccination or dental treatment. It should be assessed by a physician rather than assumed to be part of the original swelling.

Cold Sores and Lip Filler

Needle injury and swelling around the lips can trigger a cold sore in people who carry the herpes simplex virus. Tell your physician if you have ever had cold sores. For people with a history, the physician may consider a short course of an oral antiviral, such as aciclovir or valaciclovir, started before treatment. Evidence for short courses around filler is limited, so practice varies and the decision is individual.

Filler is postponed during an active outbreak, including the tingling stage before a sore appears, and until the lesion has completely healed. If blisters appear after treatment, tell the clinic at once, because a cold sore and the blisters of vascular compromise can look similar at first and need different treatment.

When Is Lip Filler Dissolved?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid filler. It is used urgently for vascular occlusion, and may also be considered for an infection or abscess related to filler, for lumps that do not settle, and for lips that remain overfilled, uneven or unwanted once swelling has gone, usually at around two weeks or later rather than in the first days. It works only on hyaluronic acid products, so your physician needs to know what was used. Risks include a rare allergic reaction, swelling after the injection and some loss of your own hyaluronic acid, and more than one session may be needed. Our guide to dissolving filler in Dubai explains the process.

Who Should Avoid Lip Filler?

Lip filler is usually postponed in pregnancy and breastfeeding, during an active cold sore, an infection, or inflammation or a skin condition near the mouth, and when there is a known allergy to any ingredient, including hyaluronic acid or lidocaine. Extra care is needed with bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medicines, autoimmune conditions, a history of severe allergy or abnormal scarring, and previous long-lasting or non-dissolvable filler in the lips. Avoid booking within about two weeks of an important event, because swelling and bruising may still show. A licensed physician must assess suitability in person.

Some people prefer a smaller change, and our articles on the lip flip and on lip flip versus lip filler explain how those options differ.

Choosing Who Treats You

Lip filler should be performed by a licensed physician whose DHA licence you can verify on the DHA Sheryan portal and who has experience with lips specifically. Ask whether your face and lip proportions are assessed before injecting, which product will be used, whether hyaluronidase is kept on site, and what the plan is if a vascular complication is suspected.

A sound plan also includes written aftercare, a way to reach the clinic outside appointment hours and a review at around two weeks. The page on lip filler gives an overview of the treatment. At dr-soheila.com, treatments are planned and performed by Dr Soheila Eskandari, a DHA-licensed general practitioner with aesthetic privileges with 20 years of experience in aesthetic medicine.

The Short Version

Lip filler swelling typically peaks during the first one to two days, eases over days three to five and has mostly settled by around two weeks, so the result is judged then rather than on day one. Uneven lips, small bruises, tenderness and soft lumps are common early and usually fade. Cold compresses, a raised head, and avoiding strenuous exercise, heat, alcohol and pressure help, while the evidence for arnica is limited.

Severe or increasing pain, blanching, a mottled or dusky colour, slow capillary refill, blisters, visual symptoms, signs of infection, or sudden swelling with breathing difficulty need urgent contact. Cold sore history should be disclosed before treatment, and hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed. Suitability should be confirmed in person by a licensed physician.

Questions Worth Asking

How can I reach you if something looks wrong? You should receive a number to call outside appointment hours and a plan for being seen quickly.

Is hyaluronidase kept on site? It is needed immediately if a vessel is blocked, so it should be available where filler is injected.

What should my lips look like on day three and at two weeks? The physician should describe the usual course and when your review will take place.

Have you asked about my cold sore history? Antiviral decisions are made before treatment, not afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does lip filler swelling last?

Swelling usually peaks within the first one to two days, eases over days three to five and has mostly settled by around two weeks, although mild residual swelling can last a little longer.

Is it normal for my lips to look uneven after filler?

Yes, swelling is rarely even, so one side or one lip can look fuller for several days; the result is judged at around two weeks, and asymmetry that remains can then be refined.

How long does bruising last after lip filler?

A bruise usually fades within about one to two weeks, changing colour as it clears, and is more likely with blood-thinning medicines, supplements and alcohol.

Are lumps after lip filler normal?

Small soft lumps are common in the first days and usually soften as swelling goes down; lumps that stay firm, become painful or are still present after two weeks should be reviewed.

What helps reduce lip filler swelling?

Cold compresses wrapped in cloth, sleeping with the head raised, and avoiding strenuous exercise, heat, alcohol and pressure on the lips for the first 24 to 48 hours help; evidence for arnica is limited and mixed.

What are the signs of vascular occlusion after lip filler?

Severe or increasing pain, blanching, a mottled or dusky colour, slow capillary refill, blisters and any visual symptoms; contact the clinic immediately or go to an emergency department.

Can I have lip filler if I get cold sores?

Usually yes, if you tell your physician beforehand; an oral antiviral may be considered before treatment, and filler is postponed during an active outbreak until the sore has fully healed.

Can lip filler be dissolved if I do not like the result?

Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, usually once swelling has settled at around two weeks, except in an emergency such as vascular occlusion, when it is used immediately.

Who should not have lip filler?

It is usually postponed in pregnancy, breastfeeding, active cold sores, infection or inflammation near the mouth and known allergy, and needs extra care with bleeding disorders, blood thinners and autoimmune conditions.

What does lip filler cost in Dubai?

Market rates generally run from around AED 1,500 to AED 3,000 per syringe, depending on the product and the injector; unusually low prices are worth questioning, since the price should cover the product, the assessment and emergency preparedness.
